Winter Talks - Thursday 24th October 2024
Published 01:00 on 25 Oct 2024
The first of our illustrated winter evening talks for 2024/25 took place in Glenogil House on Thursday evening 24th October. The talk mainly covered the maritime history of Vancouver, Vancouver Island & British Columbia. Club member Gordon Shepherd visited family in Vancouver earlier this year and since returning home he has been digging into the fascinating background of that region.
The story goes back to the age of exploration in sailing ships and includes legends such as Francis Drake and Capt Cook, and the search for the North-West passage. It stretched from east coast of North America all the way across Canada to the Pacific coast and included the fur trade and the search for gold. Gordon's whistle-stop tour of that history covered a period of more than 500 years from1492 up to the present day and involved not only Great Britain but also Spain, France, USA and Russia. It was an interesting evening, well received by the good turnout of members.
