39 of our Broughty Ferry Boating (BFB) members (rowing section of RTYC) have returned on a high from the SkiffieWorlds championships, coming 16th in the world.
This year's SkiffieWorlds, which were held in Stranraer from 6th - 12th July, had an incredible 2000 rowers competing. Rowers came from all over Scotland, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, America, Canada, South Africa and Australia, with the championships becoming the largest St Ayles skiff coastal rowing gathering in history. The SkiffieWorlds championships take place every three years. The event has grown considerably from the start in Ullapool in 2015, where 13 skiffs took part, to this year's event with an amazing 78 clubs and skiffs.
Throughout the week there was a superb team spirit amongst BFB, with crews being cheered on by teammates from the beach, or by watching the big screens on the grass. Each race was followed closely by drones filming from above and also a GPS tracker on each boat, resulting in a brilliant atmosphere for crowds watching the big screens and the very close finishes. Then, as each crew came back into the shore, there were hugs all round, with great camaraderie and support for each other.
We were delighted to be supported one day by Sandy and Lesley Bremner, and another couple of days by Iain and Anne Bancroft too, thank you for joining us.
There were some particularly commendable times and results, and a great social side to the week too. Full report and more photographs to follow in the newsletter. Well done to everyone involved in team BFB.
