Overview
Tay Sail Training (TST) was established with charitable status in 2003
In view of the very strong importance attached to training, the Club has formalised its training under a separate organisation known as Tay Sail Training. TST is a Scottish Registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) whose prime objective is "to provide community participation in healthy recreation by the provision of facilities for sailing" and in particular "the involvement and development of young people".
TST has developed training facilities significantly since its formation in 2003 as well as building up a substantial fleet of quality training boats with a range of dinghies suitable for young people and adults. TST also operates a Squib keel boat and four rigid inflatable safety boats. More recently TST has encouraged coastal rowing and funded the provision of two St Ayles Rowing skiffs.
Qualified Instructors
Practical courses are delivered by qualified instructors, largely on a voluntary basis, happy to invest their time to help develop water sports that offer so much to their participants as well as encouraging the recreational use of the wonderful natural resource of the waters of the Tay estuary.
The training programme comprises formal practical courses in sailing for adults and young people, the latter through the Cadet Section, which are all run under the RYA training schemes. Sail training courses are largely provided in dinghies and cover from the beginner stage through to more advanced sailing, including racing. To complement the sailing activity, courses are provided in powerboat handling and safety boat training. To encourage safe and enjoyable rowing, TST has also devised a training structure for the rowing section.
Informal Training Sessions
In addition to formal courses TST and RTYC provide many informal training sessions when participants can get out on the water and build up their experience.
Shore based courses are also run usually over the winter months, depending upon demand, in Day Skipper, Yachtmaster, first aid, short range radio and diesel engine maintenance. Less formal sessions are also provided for Cadets and adults in various aspects of seamanship.
TST is a voluntary based organisation which is funded largely through donations. As well as requiring funds to maintain its current activities, TST continually seeks to expand its activities to provide sailing and related water sports to other sectors in the community.
