Cadets

The RTYC actively encourage youth sailing with a cadet section (age 10 to 18) with sailing/training on Wednesday evenings throughout the sailing season.

The Cadet section is a vibrant, friendly part of the club. We have over 30 active cadets aged 10 to 18 taking part in club activities.

The club is a registered (RYA) training centre under the auspices of the Tay Sail Training. See our Cadet Training page for details of all the courses available.

Cadet Week

A cadet training and activity week is held during early July. This is a great week of sailing with a mix of training and fun activities. The activities allow cadets to develop confidence on the water while continuing their work towards RYA certificates.

Wednesday Evening Training

Our Wednesday evening sailing sessions run from April to September between 6pm and 9pm with cadets organised into groups for their on the water activities. The club is a registered (RYA) training centre under the auspices of the Tay Sail Training SCIO. This allows us to offer training towards RYA youth sailing scheme certificates.

In autumn and winter, shore-based training continues with short theory sessions between 7 and 7.30pm in the main clubhouse followed by a chance to socialise with the other cadets in the cadet room.

Go Sailing

All cadets are welcome to take part in the club's Go Sailing days where a variety of relaxed sailing activities are organised from downriver cruises, dolphin watching to just going for a wee sail. Go sailing days provide an opportunity to practice skills, develop confidence and get to know other members.

Racing

We have a group of cadets who enjoy racing and take part in racing both at the club and farther afield. A cadet racing series is run throughout the summer, where our cadets compete for several trophies. We host an open youth regatta in August which gives our sailors a chance to experience competing in a competitive regatta. We also encourage participation in the RYA pathway training and racing events across Scotland.

Cadet members are welcome to use the club facilities and take part in other club activities such as the coastal rowing, club racing and regattas.

How to Join

If you would like more information, please feel free to contact the cadet officer at cadets@royaltay.org.

Suggested clothing for dinghy sailing

For those new to sailing, it is important to wear appropriate and warm clothing when on the water. As with most outdoor clothing, staying warm is crucial.
