Squib training 2026

Squib training - Thursday evening and all day Saturday course to become comfortable sailing the club squibs, getting on and off mooring and use of tender.  

Those already reasonably proficient sailors should be able to become Squib accredited helms at the end of the course and able to take out the club squibs on their own.

Dates. Run over 2 days
Thursday 18 June 18.00 to 21.00 (HW 18.30)
 Saturday 20 June 09.30 to 17.00 (HW 07.30) 

Aim
To promote the squib fleet and give candidates confidence to safely sail them

Candidates
Open to club members, family and friends. 
Max of 9 places available.
Course fee TBC
Candidates to bring own sailing and safety gear.
Candidates must have sailing ability to seamanship 3 level, or equivalent. This training is not to be taught how to sail.

RIB driver and crew :  TBC

Use of one RIB
Use of beach clubhouse, Thursday 17.30 to 18.30 and Saturday 9.00 to 10.30, 13.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 debrief.

Lesson outline:
Thursday 18th June
Meeting beach clubhouse 17.45
Welcome, intro and safety briefing.
18.00 go over check sheet for rigging and derigging squibs
Weather/ tide info and set designated sailing area.
18.30 go out to squibs on rib with instructor and rig boats. Sail of mooring with instructor the instructor leaves boat and candidates sail in designated sailing area working on 4 essentials, sail setting, steering, balance and trim. Tacking and gybing at designated marks
20.30 instructors back in boat, return to mooring and squib derided according to check sheet
21.00 all help recover RIB and debrief.

Saturday 20th June
Meet beach clubhouse 09.15
 08.30 to 10.30 theory session
Weather and tide
Passage planning
Sailing off/on mooring 
Sailing area set.
10.30  candidates dropped off on squib to rig and sail off without instructor
12.30 return to mooring and derig.
13.30, second session. Short theory talk on anchoring and being towed.
14.00 out to boats to practise anchoring and towing in designated area.
16.30 return to mooring and derig.
17.00 assist with RIB recovery and debrief. 

End of course. A note will be kept of participants as participation in this course could be a requirement to hire a club squib in the future.
