On Thursday 27th February the main saloon at Glenogil House was packed for a very informative illustrated talk given by Andrew Blake, Marine Manager for Forth Ports, based at Dundee Harbour.
Andrew, who is himself a qualified river pilot, talked about the history of Dundee Harbour and the changes which have taken place over the centuries, from the days of sailing ships and including the heyday of the jute industry, up to the present day. He explained the wide variety of operations undertaken at the port today and its importance to the local economy. He also talked about the work of the pilots and the challenges of navigating the River Tay, handling a wide variety of river traffic including cargo ships, cruise liners, oil rigs and more recently the 'wind carrier' ships handling wind turbines. Andrew concluded his talk by taking questions on a variety of subjects. For members of a watersports club this was fascinating stuff and Andrew's talk was well-received and much appreciated.
