Dads Army @RTYC

If you are new to the RTYC Web Site

you possibly clicked on this link out of curiosity as you could not understand what Dads Army had to do with a Yacht Club? Well read on to learn more

Despite its posh sounding name the RTYC has always been a self help club with members mucking in to support one another and help maintain the clubs property, boats and premises. In the earlier years this was organised on an 'as required' basis.

However for a number of years now this has become a more 'regimented' affair in that a large group of about 30 retired members meet every Thursday morning in the Clubs Harbour Shed for the sole purpose carrying out all sorts of maintenance work for the Club. Due to the advancing years of this group they quickly became known as 'Dads Army', a name tag which they do their best to play on at every opportunity!

Despite the Platoons age group...

they are very much 'young at heart' and carry out their varied duties with much enthusiasm and high emphasis on having fun while doing these! The highlight of the Thursday mornings is the essential 'tea break' when much banter takes place much to the annoyance of 'he who has to be obeyed' our very own Captain Mainwaring, aka Captain Boyd Baird who keeps (or tries to keep!) the Platoon busy.

Needless to say the work done is of considerable benefit to the club, but the Platoon gets its reward at the Dad's Army Christmas Dinner which although it starts at lunchtime usually finishes in the evening. We work hard and play hard!

If you are interested in joining the Platoon come along to the Harbour Shed any Thursday morning by 09.30 hours or contact the club manager at the main clubhouse.. The requirements are a willingness to muck in, get dirty, be thick skinned and have fun!
